Quarry owners in Kathaana, Kangundo Sub County in Machakos have been warned against employing minors.
Speaking during an education day in Kathaana Secondary School, Board of Management Chairman Dr. Ancent Kituku said that easy money at the quarries has been enticing young boys to work instead of being in school.
The former county health boss said that several boys have abandoned their studies to work on the queries.
According to him, they begin well in Form One but after a year or two some of them begin missing school and finally drop out.
Kituku said that due to these kinds of jobs, the area has gone down in terms of education and urged parents to motivate their kids to learn.
“The town is growing mostly because of the quarrying activities; some students relinquish their studies to make quick money sabotaging their future.
“Among the resolutions we made today are for the teachers, students, parents and the local community to join forces in a bid to improve education in the area. Quarry and lorry owners should not accept workers who are underage,” he said.
Kituku spoke after awarding top students who had performed well in last year’s KCSE exams.
Benjamin Nzioka, the school’s former principal speaking in the same function urged bar owners not to admit underage students as well.
“Don’t destroy their tomorrow by selling drugs and liquor to them, treat them as your children and guide them on what is right and wrong,” he said.
He said the school is doing well but cooperation from stakeholders would go a long way. The school began with three students and has grown to over 300 students.
“We admitted over 85 Form One students this year and we would like to retain the number or even get more when they get to Form Four. We pray and hope that our school grows to become among the best in the sub county,” he said.
