A former school watchman in Busia County was yesterday sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for defiling and infecting a 12-years old school with Sexual Transmitted Disease (STI) in Teso North.
The Malaba Law Court heard that Peter Ekaranit, while employed at Kajei Primary School, lured the minor before sexually assaulting her at Achuot village, subsequently infecting her with a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI).
Resident Magistrate Zowade Ogange presided over the case at the Malaba Law Court.
“I have considered the circumstances of this case. I note that the accused person who works as a watchman interacts with a number of people at the school including young girls and his conduct as demonstrated in this case is wanting.” Magistrate Ogange noted in her ruling.

“To release the accused person to the society will put many other girls at risk. Knowing his status, he went ahead to have sex with the minor increasing her risk of exposure. I hereby sentence him to 30 years imprisonment which runs from 16/12/2024 when he was remanded.” She further stated.
Ekaranit was arrested on December 12, 2024, after the incident was reported to the Malaba Police Station.
This judgment follows another recent ruling by Magistrate Ogange on June 26, 2025. In that case, Jacob Ekwenye, Charles Emuluk, Partrick Erogat, and Levis Erogat were each sentenced to three years imprisonment for conspiracy to defeat justice. They were found guilty of conducting an unauthorized proceeding and raising funds to procure an abortion for a 17-year-old girl, an action intended to suppress a defilement case.
