Busia to relocate Polytechnic to create room for hospital expansion

The Busia County Administration is set to relocate Busia Polytechnic from the Busia Central Business District (CBD) to give way to upgrade Busia County Referral Hospital into a Level 5 teaching and referral hospital.

Making the revelation, Busia Governor Paul Otuoma said that he had already allocated funds for purchase of land where the Polytechnic will relocate.

“This is to give a six-acre room where the Polytechnic sits, so that we can up level our hospital to teaching and level five referral status,” he said.

Otuoma added the county government was keen on building a modern facility with all requirements to offer quality healthcare and medical education services to residents.

“We are aiming to compete with neighbouring Kakamega and Siaya counties, whose facilities are way advanced,” he said.

The Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Namudala Emukule said that the facility was experiencing congestion and had inadequate space for expansion, especially the psychiatric ward and the morgue.

“We have been having infrastructural challenges and if we get extra land for the facility, especially the morgue, we will be very grateful,” he said.
