Parents in Busia County have been urged to take good care of their children while at home for the short September holiday.
St. Teresa Malaba Secondary school Principal Kennedy Luvindi and St. Mathias Secondary school Principal Peter Vikuri called on parents to be close to their children to avoid engagement in wayward activities.
“We would like to urge parents to ensure their children are safe while at home. We expect all of them to report back safely so that they continue with their studies and prepare for the December examinations,” said Mr. Luvindi.
Speaking separately in their respective schools, the duo highlighted drug abuse, engaging in early and unprotected sex and Bodaboda riding as some of the activities likely to distract the learners while at home.
“These activities make them forget completely about their studies and force some of them to drop out of school,” stated Mr. Vikuri.
He further urged local administrators to regulate activities by the public which may distract the learners.
“We have activities such as ‘disco matangas’ in villages which we appeal to the local administration to regulate them so children aren’t allowed to attend,” said the Principal.
At the same time, they advised the students and pupils to take their education seriously and be critical of activities they choose to engage in.
