The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Busia branch has a new Assistant Treasurer, Mr. Jackson Namutala, following a peaceful election held to fill the post left vacant after the former passed away.

The polls took place during the branch’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Bunyala Technical and Vocational College (TVC).

Branch Chairperson Charles Mukhwana lauded the harmonious relationship cultivated between the branch and teachers in the region.

He decried the hostilities being faced by Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers in their stations and promised to bring them on board and provide much-needed support.

The branch Executive Secretary Okisai Moffats criticized the Ministry of Education (MoE) for delayed and reduced capitation funds to public schools.

“Principals are having a hard time trying to pay suppliers. This is because they are receiving inadequate capitation which is not even coming at the right time. Peanuts are being sent to schools with so many threats. We fear that suppliers are going to withdraw their services soon,” he said.

Okisai noted that the Union has pushed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to amend the Pension Act Scheme which will see that teachers dismissed from service, even 2 years before retirement, get their benefits.

He called on all teachers to observe discipline and remain role models in society.

Bungoma Executive Secretary Augustine Luketelo commended Okisai for fighting for their rights and endorsed him for the Secretary-General position in the 2026 elections.

His Kakamega counterpart Harrison Otota echoed his sentiments and promised to throw his weight behind Okisai.

National Vice Chairman Julius Korir, who was also the Chief Guest, regretted that national examination invigilators and supervisors were being poorly paid.

He called on the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to increase the wages for the teachers and threatened of dire consequences if the demand is not considered.

Korir also praised Okisai for his dedication to fighting for teachers and welcomed him and other like-minded officials to the national office in order to fight for teachers’ welfare across the country.
