Busia county holds requiem mass for perished Ebenezer Academy pupils

A sombre mood engulfed Busia Polytechnic during the requiem mass for the eight Grade 5 pupils of Busia Ebenezer Academy who passed on in a road accident last Saturday at Kaburengu in Kakamega County.

Speaking while presiding over the event, Busia Governor Otuoma blamed the Kenya National Highway Authority (KenHA) for failing to address the killer Kaburengu-Chimoi road which has claimed many lives in the recent past.

He said that frequent deaths at the Kaburengu black spot were a wake-up call to redesign the road so as to curb accidents in the area.

Otuoma added that the county will offer necessary support to the bereaved families and county and national government officers will be dispatched to condole with them at their various homes during the burial ceremonies.

Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera said the fatal accident was unfortunate and urged the county to provide counseling for the deceased families and get stakeholders to support the school back to producing exemplary results.

He revealed that 59 people have lost their lives at the killer spot since January 2022, describing it as a sad moment for the region.

Matayos MP Geofffrey Odanga said he will support Nabwera’s motion at the National Assembly to redesign the Kaburengu-Chimoi road while Acting County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto called on NTSA to enforce road traffic rules to the letter.

Busia Assembly Speaker Ronald Ochalu and Bishop David Bulimu condemned the incident and called for accountability from relevant authorities.

Also in attendance was KEPSHA Western Region Chairman Andrew Tobias Omusele.
