Various organizations in Bungoma County have rolled out tree planting exercises in a bid to increase forest cover in Bungoma schools and make the environment greener.
Speaking to the press at Mukhaweli Primary school in Kanduyi constituency, Samuel Ndiema the founder of Fruits and flowers initiative said that the organization donates fruits and flowers to public primary schools. He added that they target to donate 40,000 trees by the end of this year.
Ndiema lauded Bungoma Youth Connect (BYC), Evergreen woodlots, Bungoma County government, Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) for supporting the initiative to propagate trees in schools.
“We have launched a 20,000 trees nursery capacity at Mukhaweli primary school that will provide more seedlings,’ he said.
Mildred Sikuku, a senior teacher at Mukhaweli primary school lauded the move by the organization.
“Mukhaweli primary school borders river Khalaba and this move will help us plant more trees in the school. Our main objective is to make Mukhaweli a green place,” she said.
Joel Omondi, the president of BYC pledged to support the initiative in all aspects so that it achieves its goal.
Bungoma County NEMA director, John Maniafu assured the organization of his support.
