Residents of Sang’alo have expressed discontent over the recent renaming of the Sang’alo Institute of Science and Technology to Bungoma National Polytechnic, following its elevation to national status.
Addressing mourners at Kitinda village near the college in Kanduyi constituency, Former Khalaba Ward MCA, Henry Majimbo Okumu led the cause questioning why the name Sang’alo was replaced with “Bungoma.”
“The local community should have been consulted before such a decision was made regarding an institution situated on their soil,” he reiterated.
Additionally, Okumu demanded clarification on whether the elevation gazette notice included the name change and challenged Bungoma County elected leaders to disclose who authorized this alteration and if public participation was conducted.
“Residents won’t tolerate leaders distorting their history and jeopardizing their identity for personal gain,” he stated.
Okumu further emphasized that the institution, originally an agriculture training center established in the early 1970s on over 500 acres, holds historical significance.
The elevation to national status was spurred by a request from Kanduyi MP John Makali during President William Ruto’s visit to the region two months prior.
However, whether the change of name was discussed, approved, and gazetted remains unclear.
