There is uproar in Bungoma after a nurse at Elgon View Hospital in Bungoma allegedly raped a patient who had been admitted at the facility for wound dressing and malaria treatment.
The raped patient is reported to be a Form Three student at Luuhya Girls in Kabuchai Constituency.
Addressing Journalists at Bungoma police station on Tuesday, Maurice Wanjala, the father, condemned the hospital management for hiding evidence pertaining to the rape incident that occurred in the hospital ward.
He added that his daughter was admitted to Elgon View Hospital on Friday after he complained of a headache and joint pain.
“My daughter was admitted to the hospital on Friday for treatment, but I was shocked that a health provider was praying after my daughter,” Wanjala said.
Peninnah Wanjala, the mother, stated that the matter was reported at Bungoma police station, where the suspect is being held.
Wanjala condemned the hospital management for allowing the victim to take a shower, which interfered with evidence.
She noted that a doctor reported the rape case at the same facility, who advised us to report the matter to the Bungoma police station.
Martin Wekesa, the suspect, acknowledged the mistake through a letter to the hospital management.
He quotes,” I, Martin Wekesa, write this letter to acknowledge that what I did yesternight was a mistake. Yesterday at 12 am, I was found by the Clinician on duty and the caretaker while cuddling a patient during duty hours. I acknowledge that this is a great mistake. I really regret and apologise for the error I made. I promise that I won’t repeat this anywhere.”

Confirming the incident, William Letting, Bungoma South Police Commander, admitted that the rape case was reported at Bungoma police station, where a nurse is currently detained.
Letting said that the victim had been admitted to Elgon View Hospital with wounds on the leg and malaria after the nurse took advantage and raped the victim.
He said that the victim reports having been forced to have sex with the nurse inside the hospital wards.
The police boss stated that the suspect is currently detained at Bungoma Police Station, awaiting arraignment in court.
Given the high numbers of defilement and rape cases in the region, healthcare providers should be keen when attending to patients in the health facilities.
However, Elgon View Hospital management admitted that the incident happened at their facility, arguing that the two are apparently lovers and the girl faked symptoms to come and sleep with the nurse in the hospital.
It states that after management discovered it, they reported the incident to the Bungoma police station.
“We have since sacked this nurse and reported him to his professional body,” stated Elgon View Hospital management.
