University graduands have been advised to build soft skills as they step out into the job market.

Engineer Catherine Nyambala told the youths to enrich themselves with soft skills like team work, communication and networking as they are critical in job searching in an increasingly competitive world.

The Engineer was speaking during the third graduation ceremony at Machakos Medical and Technical Training Institute where she was the chief guest on Friday, 4Th March 2022.

“Searching for a job begins with building a skill. You need to build both technical and non-technical skills. You have to step out of your comfort zone and step into the world. The way you behave every single day is a demonstration of who you are,” said Eng. Nyambala who is a staffer at Kengen.

The graduands in various disciplines including nurses, community health workers, pharmacists, as well as in fields such as secretarial, electrical engineering, beauty therapy and cosmetologists who were awarded with Diplomas and Certificates were also advised to be ready to create jobs and become employers using the skills they had gained.

“The job that you are sure of getting is the job that you create. If you decide to start tomorrow you may succeed,” she told the graduands.

She also advised the young graduands to be courageous and exhibit energy in their quest in order to reap big rewards.

The College Proprietor Professor Faith Muli noted that traditional courses such as Secretarial which had been thought to become extinct with the introduction of computers were still marketable having withstood the test of time.

“This is a course which was going down because of ICT but it is still in demand because every office needs a Secretary. All our previous graduates are now employed,” said Prof Muli.

Prof. Muli said the college was dynamic and incorporating new trends in the training of the students who were examined by various examination bodies such as the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), Kings International University of Science and Technology (KIUST) and the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

A total of 164 students were awarded with various Certificates and Diplomas.
