Bring back closed varsity campuses, educationist tells Machogu

Education stakeholders from Nyamira County have asked area leaders to push the government to establish new and reopen closed down university campuses instead of politicking about boundaries.

“Trying to duel on who should own which piece of land in the region is not a priority but provision of quality education should be at the centre of our leaders’ hearts,” said Charles Mayieka, a retired education officer.

Mayieka further asked Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu to consider reopening university campuses that were closed by his predecessors.

“Most of our Universities are away from learners therefore establishing campuses near their homes reduces costs including accommodation, food and travelling,” he said.

Dr. Abednego Keraita said that some condemned campuses in Migori, Ogembo, Kisii and Nyamira have viable infrastructure that can accommodate education and business-related courses successfully.

Saying that education is a valuable commodity that must be treasured by all, Prof. Laban Ondari gave an example of India where universities open campuses in people’s private homes and education was thriving well.

Ondari asked leaders not to politicize education to gain political mileage at the expense of the future of the county’s learners.

A spot check by Education News confirmed that abandoned rooms that were rented by Kisii and Nairobi Universities at Nyangweta in Gucha South sub-county, Twin towers in Kisii town, Ogembo town in Gucha sub-county, and Nyamira.

Another closed campus for Kisii University includes Musomi Teachers Training College in Migori County.
