Celebrations engulfed the Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa today after Willie Kuria was elected as the National Chairperson of the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) in the on-going Association 47th Annual Conference and Exhibition.

Kuria, who also doubles as the school Principal Murang’a High has been serving in an acting capacity after the retirement of his predecessor Kahi Indimuli who served as the association’s national chairperson for close to 10 years.

Elections were presided over by William Sugut, Director of Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education, Reuben Nthamburi and Antonina Lentoijoni from Teachers Service Commission.

Elias Cheruyoy takes over as the National Vice Chairperson, replacing Bonface Karisa.

Joyce Omondi is the new National Treasurer taking over from Amos Cherono while Julius Mutwii is the new Assistant National Treasurer, position previously held by Lucy Lukunga and new National Secretary is Abdi Noor.

Florence Ngarari is the new National Organising Secretary succeeding Andrew Buop as Albert Masiolo becomes Assistant Organising Secretary, taking over from Godfery Owori.

In his acceptance speech, Kuria said that he will continue advocating for proper funding of schools as well as promotion of the school heads.

“We have a huge challenge of promotions, as members of KESSHA we feel that we should be at the next level. We feel that we have been delayed far too long and we should move to another one,” he said.

On matters of schools funding, he said that the association intends to talk to the Education Ministry so that they can explore ways in which funding in schools can be improved as well as increasing the money allocated to schools.

“Of course there are ways that exist and we are going to give proposals and we hope we shall be in a position to see if funding can be increased,” he added.
