First Lady Rachael Ruto has fulfilled her promise to Unoa Comprehensive School by launching the drilling of the borehole she had promised during the African Child Day, celebrated on June 16, 2025.
Speaking during the launch, she noted that she was touched by how the pupils were seated on a very dusty field. Upon inquiry, she discovered that the school has no water of its own and relies on fetching water from outside.
As she launched, she promised the learners that upon opening the school on August 26, they would have access to plenty of fresh drinking water, for use in the kitchen garden and for tree planting, among other purposes.

“The water is drilled through the office of the First Lady. I have fulfilled my pledge. This project will significantly boost food security through kitchen gardening, enhance sanitation, improve general academic performance, help the neighbouring community, and ease water access to the residents of Wote,” the First Lady said.
She called for tree planting in addition to crop planting. She noted that Unoa Primary will be a pilot school to enhance kitchen gardens in schools. Again, she observed that many schools, including Unoa, are not using clean energy, promising clean cooking in the school.
“I have seen a man in the kitchen who is fully covered by smoke, and that is his daily routine. I promise to change that through clean energy,” First Lady said.
She added that the government is collaborating with all schools to support different developments.
The first lady was accompanied by several other leaders, including Makueni County First Lady Anita Mutula, who requested that the project be secured to prevent vandalism.
“We have also requested to have extra storage of the water for the people on the ground and installation of a solar panel to save electricity. The water is going to benefit the community and we should own and take care of it to the latter,” Anita said.
She thanked the first lady adding that Unoa primary for the longest time of about 75 years has had no water and this is a major stride.
