Bondo’s Barkowino Secondary sends 23 to university

By Erick Nyayiera

Bondo’s Barkowino Secondary School has for 3 consecutive years battled poor public image and strived to cement its place in the charts of academic excellence.

The school with a high student base that largely comes from Bondo town and its environs has for years been in the limelight for all the wrong reasons including reports of drug abuse and dropping out of school by girls owing to the influence of the town.

In the 2020 KCSE results, the mixed day school registered an improvement and managed to send 23 students to university.

The school had a mean of 4.937 from a mean of 4.707 the previous year and had B+ (1), B- (11), C+ (11), C (17), C- (52), D+(49).

The school also produced 141 students who will be eligible to get placements at Teacher Training Centres, Medical Training Colleges and Technical Training Colleges in Kenya.

Principal Francis Ouko whose three years’ tenure has revamped the institution disclosed that he’s satisfied with the results and the positive deviation given they had reservations with the 2020 cohort.

In his short stint, Ouko has since instilled a working system in the school necessitating steady academic improvements and initiating key infrastructural developments.

“The teachers worked extra hard and we have every reason to celebrate, we reduced wastage and we have no E grade in the results. You remember this is the lot which had issues with strikes and series of issues a few years ago before I came here. The results therefore are welcome news to us,” said Ouko.

He added, “The Ministry of Education, BOM and Parents have walked with us in this journey and we continue to plead for more support.”
