Women from Merigi and Longisa areas in Bomet County have raised fresh concerns over the growing sale and consumption of drugs in the area, warning that the trend is undermining education and posing a serious security threat to local communities.
The women, many of whom have children in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, said a worrying number of those abusing drugs are students currently on holiday. They fear the situation could lead to increased school dropouts if urgent action is not taken.
“Our biggest worry is that many of the drunkards we see every day are students. If this continues, we fear our children will drop out of school,” said Fancy Kirui, one of the group’s leaders.
Kirui and fellow resident Emily Sigey accused security agencies of ignoring repeated reports about the illegal trade, saying drug peddling continues openly despite numerous complaints. During a peaceful demonstration, the women said the inaction has emboldened suppliers and exposed families to greater risk.

They also expressed concern over rising insecurity, noting that some intoxicated youths have been involved in violent incidents or sustained injuries while under the influence. “This has become a serious security threat. We cannot freely go about our daily activities because of fear of attacks by drunk youths,” Kirui said.
The women appealed to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to intervene, arguing that local security teams have failed to contain the situation. Sigey added that drug abuse is tearing families apart and weakening productivity in households. “This business is destroying our families and reducing productivity. Many men no longer play their roles in their homes because of drug abuse,” she said.
They called for swift government action to protect learners, restore safety and preserve family stability in the affected areas.
