Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that President William Ruto will soon award a charter to Bomet University College, officially upgrading it into a fully-fledged university.
Speaking during in Kaboson in Bomet County, Murkomen said the move will mark a significant milestone in the growth of higher education in the South Rift region.
He revealed that the necessary processes were at an advanced stage and that President Ruto’s administration is committed to strengthening education across all levels.
“Bomet University College will soon become a full university. His Excellency the President has made education a key priority, and this elevation is part of his plan to expand access to quality higher education,” said Murkomen.
Currently, Bomet University College operates as a constituent college of Moi University.
Since its establishment, the institution has grown steadily, attracting thousands of students pursuing degrees in business, education, science, and technology. The anticipated charter will bring a host of benefits to the institution and the local community.

Once granted, Bomet University will have full autonomy in academic governance, curriculum development, and research partnerships, allowing it to tailor programs that directly respond to regional and national development needs.
The elevation will also enable the university to create more employment opportunities, attract more funding for infrastructure, and improve the quality of teaching and learning facilities.
The local businesses and the housing sector are also expected to experience a boost as the student population and staff numbers rise.
Murkomen commended President Ruto for his continued support of the education sector, noting that the government has invested heavily in expanding access to university education and technical training institutions across the country.
“This is part of the President’s vision to make Kenya a regional hub of education and innovation. By empowering our universities, we empower the youth to shape their own future,” the CS added.
The announcement was received with excitement by Bomet residents, who see the charter as a long-awaited recognition of the county’s growing contribution to Kenya’s education and development.
