Students at Bomet University College on Thursday evening held a solemn candlelight vigil in honour of the late Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s longtime opposition leader, whose passing has plunged the nation into mourning.

The vigil, which began shortly after sunset at the university grounds, drew hundreds of students and staff who gathered to celebrate Odinga’s life and legacy.

The participants lit candles, sang hymns, and observed a moment of silence in memory of a man many described as a symbol of courage, democracy, and national unity.

Student leaders said the event was organized to allow the youth to express their grief and appreciation for Odinga’s contribution to Kenya’s political and social transformation.

“Raila Odinga dedicated his life to the struggle for democracy, justice, and equality. As young people, we honour him for standing firm even in the face of adversity,” said one student representative during the event.

After the on-campus vigil, the students marched peacefully to Bomet Town, carrying candles and placards bearing messages such as ‘Forever in Our Hearts Raila’, ‘A True Patriot’, and ‘Your Spirit Lives On’.

The peaceful procession moved along the Bomet–Kaplong road, attracting residents and motorists who briefly joined in solidarity.

Business in parts of Bomet Town slowed down as locals paused to watch the candle-lit march.

Many residents commended the students for conducting themselves peacefully and for sending a message of unity and respect during a difficult mourning time.

The students concluded the evening with a short prayer service, expressing hope that Odinga’s dream of a united, equitable Kenya would continue to inspire future generations.
