A teacher in Bomet County has called on educators to elect union leaders who have the interests of teachers at heart, saying strong leadership is key to protecting welfare, enhancing representation and safeguarding professional rights.

Emmanuel Cheruiyot Ngeno urged members of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) to prioritise leaders who are accessible, transparent and committed to advancing teachers’ concerns through effective advocacy and service.

He noted that teachers require leadership that understands their daily challenges, including welfare issues, working conditions and fair labour practices.

Ngeno emphasised that union leadership should focus on defending teachers’ rights through consistent engagement with relevant authorities, promoting accountability in union affairs and strengthening unity among members.

According to him, leaders must remain available during critical moments such as negotiations, demonstrations and welfare support initiatives.

Ngeno also stressed the importance of improving teachers’ welfare programmes, including access to medical services, support during emergencies and professional development opportunities.

He said strong representation in union activities and decision-making forums would ensure teachers’ voices are heard and their interests protected.

The educator, who teaches at Chepngaina Secondary School in Bomet Central Sub-county and has declared his bid for the KUPPET Bomet Branch chairmanship, outlined an agenda focused on advocacy, welfare and effective representation of teachers.

He cited his participation in demonstrations and strike actions, including involvement in the 2024 strike compliance exercise and protests over JSS confirmation and their autonomy.

He also highlighted his advocacy for transparency in salary deductions and his efforts to keep teachers informed on union matters, including constitutional updates and professional resources.

Ngeno further pledged to strengthen teachers’ welfare by supporting colleagues in accessing medical insurance, visiting sick colleagues, and contributing to welfare initiatives.

The aspirant said his leadership would focus on unity, accountability, and service delivery to improve working conditions and professional well-being for teachers across Bomet County.
