Bomet County yesterday joined the world in celebrating International Men’s Day (IMD), a global awareness day observed annually on November 19 to highlight issues affecting men and boys, including abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence.
This year’s theme, “Supporting Men and Boys,” underscored the need to promote male wellbeing and positive societal contributions.
In Bomet, the occasion was marked with a Men’s Conference that brought together grassroots leaders, government officials, and civil society representatives.
The event was hosted by the Department of Culture, Gender and Social Services in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross – Bomet Branch.
Speaking during the conference, the CECM for Culture, Gender and Social Services, Dr. Benard Tonui, emphasized that International Men’s Day is not only a celebration of men but also a strategic platform for advocacy and education.
He highlighted the importance of addressing gender-based violence (GBV), promoting men’s mental and physical health, and fostering positive male role models in families and communities.

“The day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the challenges that men face, to celebrate their contributions, and to ensure that men are supported in building safer homes and stronger communities,” Dr. Tonui noted.
The forum also provided an avenue to discuss the role of men in preventing gender-based violence, raising awareness on discrimination against men, and strengthening gender relations to promote equality.
Among the participants were directors from the Department of Culture, Gender and Social Services, representatives from the Office of the County Commissioner, Department of Health Services, Bomet University, as well as civil society organizations including Mugeni and OKOA Boy Child Organization.
The diverse turnout underscored the shared commitment to empowering men and boys while promoting societal harmony.
This year’s observance in Bomet not only celebrated men but also reinforced the message that supporting men and boys is essential for healthy families and resilient communities.
