Bomet KUPPET Branch Chairman Ernest Kirui has urged the government and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to confirm all Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers currently serving under internship terms to permanent and pensionable status.
Speaking during the burial of Pastor Stanley Rugut, the father of teacher Shadrack Kirui, at Olngoswet area in Longisa Ward, Bomet East Sub-county on Tuesday, Kirui said it was unjust for the government to continue keeping trained and qualified teachers under internship contracts despite their pivotal role in implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

“The government must move with speed to confirm intern JSS teachers. They are professionals who are already delivering lessons, marking, mentoring learners, and carrying full teaching responsibilities. It is unfair to keep them in uncertainty while others enjoy job security,” Kirui declared, drawing applause from the gathering.
He noted that JSS teachers have continued to serve diligently despite facing numerous challenges, including meager pay, lack of teaching materials, and heavy workloads. Kirui warned that continued neglect of their welfare could weaken the education sector and demotivate the teachers at a critical stage of the CBC rollout.
“The government cannot reform education while ignoring the welfare of teachers. These young educators deserve better. Confirming them will not only motivate them but also stabilize the learning environment for our children,” he said.
The KUPPET chair concluded by urging the government and TSC to act swiftly, emphasizing that “it is time to end exploitation and restore dignity to our teachers and ensure all intern JSS teachers are absorbed by January 2026.”
