The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Bomet Branch assistant treasurer aspirant Cosmas Yegon is pushing for a more inclusive teachers’ economic empowerment which goes beyond the usual monthly salaries.
Speaking during an open forum, Yegon popularly known as ‘Annan the Farming Teacher’ said that beyond salary negotiations, teachers require strong systems that promote prudent use of resources, savings, and long-term investment.
He added that financial management is increasingly being viewed as a critical pillar in improving the welfare, stability and productivity of teachers, amid rising living costs and growing economic pressures.
Cosmas argues that effective financial management within the union and among individual teachers is key to restoring dignity and focus in the profession.
According to Cosmas, poor financial planning has left many teachers vulnerable to debt, financial stress and uncertainty, ultimately affecting their professional output.
He believes that unions have a responsibility not only to safeguard members’ contributions but also to guide teachers towards sustainable financial practices.
“Teachers need structured support to save, invest, and diversify income. Financial management is about securing the present and preparing for the future,” he said.

Cosmas’ approach emphasizes transparent and accountable handling of union funds, alongside initiatives that promote a strong savings and investment culture.
He proposes that KUPPET should play a more active role in supporting teacher-led income-generating projects, particularly in agribusiness and small-scale entrepreneurship, sectors he says many teachers are already involved in informally.
Education analysts say that empowering teachers with financial management skills can significantly reduce economic stress, allowing educators to concentrate better in the classroom and deliver improved learning outcomes.
He added that unions which invest in the financial wellbeing of members strengthen just trust and unity within their ranks.
As KUPPET prepares for upcoming elections, the Assistant Treasurer position is attracting renewed attention with financial stewardship emerging as a defining issue.
Observers note that teachers are increasingly seeking leaders who combine integrity, practical experience and a clear vision for economic empowerment.
Cosmas’ candidature reflects a broader shift within the teaching fraternity towards leadership that prioritizes responsible financial management as a foundation for sustainable teacher welfare.
Many believe that strengthening financial systems within the union could play a transformative role in uplifting teachers and reinforcing the profession’s contribution to national development.
