The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Bomet Branch, wants a cancer centre set up in the county as cases rise with each passing day.
Branch Chairman Davis Mitei said the centre will help in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, questioning why the initial plans to set it up had fizzled out despite having reached advanced levels.
“There were plans to set up a cancer centre in this region but we no longer hear of the same. We want the centre urgently set up so that we can access screening and treatment of the disease with ease,” he said.
Speaking in Kiptunoi, Konoin Sub-county, Mitei underscored the need for screening, which he said is important as far as fighting the disease is concerned.
He appealed for cooperation among local leaders to help speed up the construction of the centre.
On education, Mitei lamented that boys have been neglected with much focus being directed to the girl child, a situation he said has taken a toll on the growth and self-esteem of boys.
“Much focus has been directed to the girl child with the boy child being neglected. Girls now study upto university and get good jobs while boys drop out of school and start operating bodabodas and other activities. This is worrying and must be addressed,” observed Mitei.
The number of girls attending school in the county has increased in the recent past, with more boys dropping out of school to work in the bodaboda industry and local tea companies.
