Bomet JSS teachers vow to paralyze learning in schools they teach

JSS teachers in Bomet have vowed to paralyze learning in the schools they teach until their demands are met.

Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers in Bomet have vowed to paralyze learning in the schools they teach in the region until their demands are met.

The interns, who staged demonstrations in Bomet town, said they will only report to the learning institutions after they have been issued with employment letters.

Led by Joyce Chepkirui, they vowed to hold weekly demonstrations, blaming the government for the manner in which it was addressing the crisis.

“Internship is illegal and as teachers, we are ready to stay out as long as it takes. The government has no option but honour the court ruling and confirm and compensate us,” said Chepkirui.

She wondered why TSC letters were being distributed by MPs and not by TSC, adding that some of them spend a lot of money in fare, travelling to and from their work stations.

The sentiments were echoed by Brenda Chelang’at, who demanded that TSC should also compensate them as ordered by the court.

“We feel neglected and demeaned because of the TSC’s response to our issues. TSC is yet to invite JSS teachers or their union representatives to discuss the way forward. They promised to hire us in June last year but that turned out to be another empty promise,” said Chelang’at.

Branch KUPPET Secretary Paul Kimetto defended the teachers, further warning of a possible collapse of the education system should the government fail to address the issues.

Kimetto said the teachers face numerous problems, adding that learning activities have totally been paralysed in all JSS schools across the county.
