Bomet ECDE teachers want salaries accruing from January paid before schools reopen

Richard Chebusit, Chairman Bomet ECDE. They are demanding payment of accrued salaries from the beginning of the year before schools reopen next week.

Barely a day after JSS teachers held demonstrations for better employment terms in Bomet, their Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) counterparts want the county to meet their demands before schools reopen next week.

Led by their chairman Richard Chebusit, they noted that attempts to meet the relevant officers have borne no fruit as they have been elusive.

Addressing the press in Bomet town, Chebusit said he has received complaints of teachers who have not received salaries since January.

“As ECDE teachers, we have forwarded our demands to the county. We hereby want the county to address the demands before schools reopen. Failure to this, we shall down our tools,” he said.

According to him, low salaries and delayed confirmation has demoralized the teachers, whom he says play a critical role in shaping the life of children.

Chebusit claimed many teachers are currently grappling with depression, a problem he described as a time bomb.

“Many teachers have not received salaries since January and this is inhuman. How do you withhold teachers’ salaries and expect them to work? In other counties, ECDE teachers have good terms but here, the case is different. We demand the immediate intervention of Governor Hillary Barchok,” said Chebusit.

The teachers now want Governor Hillary Barchok to break his silence on the matter, vowing not to resume work once the strike commences until all their demands are fully met.

Branch KNUT Executive Secretary Desmond Lang’at announced that the union stands in solidarity with the teachers, accusing the county of neglecting the tutors.

“We are supposed to follow the guidelines given out by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, but here in Bomet, they are doing their own thing,” Lang’at lamented.
