Students from various higher learning institutions in Bomet East Constituency have raised concerns over the recent disbursement of NG-CDF bursaries, alleging discrepancies in the allocation process and delays that have left many stranded as examinations continue.

Speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, several students claimed that although it was publicly announced that Sh 70 million had been set aside for bursaries, a significant number of beneficiaries reportedly received only Sh 7,000 each.

The students say the amount is far below expectations, especially given the rising cost of tuition and accommodation in colleges and universities across the country.

Some questioned the criteria used in determining the allocations, arguing that the process lacks clarity.

“We were asked to attach sensitive documents, including death certificates and other supporting paperwork, to prove our financial need. After going through all that, being awarded Sh 7,000 feels unfair and discouraging,” said one student.

Others expressed concern that some institutions had yet to receive the bursary cheques, even as examinations are ongoing. They warned that the delays could result in students being barred from sitting exams due to fee arrears.

The students further alleged poor communication from relevant offices, claiming that attempts to seek clarification have largely gone unanswered.

They are now calling for a thorough audit and greater transparency in the management of NG-CDF funds within the constituency.

“If this issue is not addressed promptly, we may be forced to organise peaceful demonstrations at the CDF office, alongside parents and guardians,” another student stated.

Their demands centre on accountability, transparency in the allocation formula, and timely disbursement of funds to institutions.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the Bomet East NG-CDF office were unsuccessful by the time of publication.

The matter now raises broader questions about oversight and accountability in constituency-level bursary management, as students insist that public funds meant to support education must be handled with fairness and openness.
