Bomet County steps up efforts to improve nutrition, physical activity of ECDE learners

The County Government of Bomet has intensified efforts to improve nutrition and physical activity among young learners through a sensitization workshop targeting Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers.

The one-day workshop, on Wednesday, organised by the Department of Education and Vocational Training in collaboration with the Nutrition Department under the Department of Health Services, brought together ECDE teachers from all five sub-counties to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to promote healthy diets and physical activities in pre-primary institutions.

Speaking during the event, Education Chief Officer John Keter noted that optimal nutrition and physical exercise are essential elements for a healthier, more productive society and play a critical role in the physical and brain development of young children.

He emphasised that ECDE teachers, who spend much of their day with children, are uniquely positioned to influence healthy behaviours of learners at an early age.

“Teachers are our first line of defense in shaping the lifestyle habits of our children. By empowering them with the right tools and information, we are laying the foundation for a healthier future generation,” said Keter.

Over the past four years, the County Government of Bomet has implemented a free school milk programme for ECDE learners as part of its efforts to enhance nutrition. This initiative has been widely credited with improving children’s health and classroom participation while easing the burden on parents.

The country officials called upon parents and guardians to complement these efforts at home by providing balanced meals and encouraging physical activity for their children.

“Healthy eating is not just a school issue; it is a community and family responsibility. We urge parents to feed their children the right diet for optimum growth and development,” said a representative from the Nutrition Department.

The county government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships between schools, health professionals, and parents to promote lifelong healthy habits among children.

With continued investment in nutrition and physical education, officials said, Bomet aims to create a more robust, active and academically successful young population.
