Boda Boda riders in Meru County have been identified as major partners in the initiative to help stamp out cases of school dropouts.
Addressing Boda Boda leaders at Kagaene in Tigania East Sub-county during a sensitisation meeting, Meru County Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga urged riders to be at the forefront in defending the rights of children as they conduct their daily transport business.
Nyagwanga cautioned the riders against luring young girls into sexual relationships before they complete their education.
“Anyone under the age of 18 years cannot consent to any love relationship. It is both unethical and criminal for men to engage in relationships with young girls,” he warned.
He reiterated that for education standards in Tigania East to improve, there was need to ensure both the girl and boy child remain in school.
“It is not only girls that drop out of school. Boys too are tempted into Boda Boda trade to make quick cash,” noted Nyangwanga.
He warned motorbike owners against recruiting children as riders. Parents too were advised against buying motorcycles for their children.
