Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilian has told parents to take care of their children during this rainy season to prevent them from being swept away by strong and flooding rivers.
He advised them to dress their children in warm, heavy clothes to protect them from rain and cold, which can lead to fever and waterborne diseases.
“We are staying in a low land; we must know its seasonal behaviours and prepare to adapt to the changes,” he said.
The County boss spoke at Homabay town on Friday after learning about the heavy rain that ripped off the roofs of two classrooms of Ringiti Primary School in Suba in Mbita Constituency.
According to the Secretary of Ringiti Beach Management Unit, the heavy rain mixed with strong wind ripped off the two roofs and threw them about 100 meters away from the site.

He wondered how and where the pupils of the affected classrooms would conduct their studies tomorrow when they report to school after the weekend.
The Secretary appealed to the Ministry of Education to act quickly and provide funds to rebuild the destroyed rooms, saving the pupils from the embarrassment of missing their classrooms.
He said that the rain, too, left nine families devasted. The house roofs were blown off, forcing them to spend the night in the cold.
Education News’s spot check revealed other areas affected by the heavy torrents, notably Ringiti PEFA and SDA churches, whose walls and roofs were destroyed.
Residents and church leaders appealed to the government and well-wishers to help them repair the church and donate money and food to help the affected people start life afresh and continue to survive after the calamity.
