Bishop writes to TSC protesting Kisumu Day High School principal appointment

Bishop Charles Ochieng Ong’injo of the Diocese of Maseno South protests TSC’s proposed principal appointment at Kisumu Day High, alleging political interference.

The Bishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya’s Diocese of Maseno South, Rt. Rev. Charles Ochieng Ong’injo has written to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) protesting the proposed appointment of a new principal at Kisumu Day High School.

In a letter dated August 12, 2025, addressed to Timon Oyucho at the TSC headquarters in Nairobi, Bishop Ong’injo refers to an earlier letter and a follow-up telephone discussion on July 17, 2025, regarding the posting of a principal to the school following the retirement of Daniel Mwaturo after eight years of service.

The bishop expresses concern over alleged political interference in the appointment process, warning that “you have just messed up the schools in this region.”

The letter accuses the Commission of using principal appointments for political fundraising, noting that “this has sadly blinded you from objectively offering services.”

Bishop Ong’injo further warns that stakeholders will “not take this lying low” and rejects the proposed principal, urging the TSC to “be prepared for a serious standoff led by the sponsor.”

Pointing to specific grievances, the bishop highlights what he calls “a plan to land Rabet from Kudho” to conceal existing issues at Kisumu Day, a move he claims was orchestrated to gain political mileage ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He recalls that recommendations from the staffing panel and letters from local leaders “were blatantly ignored” and advises the Commission to reconsider.

In a strong concluding statement, Bishop Ong’injo warns against “mixing political ambition with public service,” asking the Commission to foster a positive legacy rather than tarnishing the teaching profession.

“The truth shall set us free,” he concludes.

Kisumu Day is a well-known institution in Kisumu County, sponsored by the Anglican Church of Kenya.

Principal postings in public schools are done by the TSC, often with input from school sponsors and local education boards.

Disputes over such appointments are not uncommon, particularly when allegations of political influence emerge.

The letter was copied to the Chairman of the Board, TSC County Director, MP for Kisumu Central, Outgoing Principal, Governor of Kisumu County, TSC Regional Director, Secretary of Kuppet Kisumu, and Diocesan Education Secretary.
