Bishop roots for modern facilities in special schools

A bishop has called for enactment of a law to support an integrated system of learning to accommodate students with special needs in learning institutions.
Charles Kinyanjui of Missionary Church of Kenya said majority of special schools in the country lack adequate learning materials and qualified staff to handle students with special needs.
“It is high time the Government thought of crafting a legislative framework to address the huge gaps in the education sector where needs of students with various disabilities have not been properly taken care of,” Bishop Kinyanjui said.
The bishop noted that critical facilities in majority of integrated schools were not user-friendly for students with disabilities.
“Classrooms, dormitories dining halls and even washrooms in many of these institutions do not take cognizance of existence of students with special needs and we are urging policy makers in the education sector to address this as a matter of urgency,” he added.
He spoke at a funeral service in Nguluni location, Matungulu Sub County where he challenged parents and guardians of children with special needs to ensure they enroll them in intergraded schools.
