Kakamega Catholic Diocese Bishop Joseph Obanyi has pledged to give special attention to Bishop Sulumeti Girls High School, describing it as a lasting legacy of his predecessor, the late Bishop Emeritus Philip Sulumeti.

Speaking during a Thanksgiving Mass held at the institution, Bishop Obanyi recalled that Bishop Sulumeti personally invested his own resources to establish the school, driven by a desire to uplift the girl child at a time when many communities undervalued girls’ education. He noted that the late bishop’s vision opened doors for countless young women who might otherwise have been denied the chance to pursue learning.

The Thanksgiving ceremony was a celebration of Bishop Sulumeti’s life. Bishop Obanyi urged parents, students, and education stakeholders to embrace the values and legacy left behind, stressing that the school remains a symbol of sacrifice and commitment to empowering girls.

Obanyi, who succeeded Bishop Sulumeti in 2015 when the latter retired, said Bishop Sulumeti often spoke passionately about how the school came into being. “One school that pricked my mind during the transition was Bishop Sulumeti Girls. I once heard him explain how he traded his own gift for the sake of the school. Today, the facility stands stronger than ever,” he said.

Since taking over the diocese, Bishop Obanyi has shown keen interest in the school, particularly in overseeing leadership transitions and the deployment of principals. He emphasized that Bishop Sulumeti’s dedication went beyond personal ambition, as he consistently cherished the institution and its mission.

The bishop lauded his predecessor’s sacrifice, describing him as a leader who gave up personal desires to ensure that girls had access to education. He assured the current students that the late bishop’s legacy would continue to live on through their achievements.
