Beyond students: Why schools’ Guidance Departments must also support teachers’ mental health

Martin Ruto highlights the vital role of Guidance and Counselling in tackling indiscipline, stress, and mental health challenges among learners and teachers.

The guidance and counselling department is very important in learning institutions, both for learners and teachers.

Some learners undergo many challenges both at home and in school.

Some parents, due to the pressure of work or negligence, do not have time for their children, and this scenario can lead to indiscipline cases among learners, which is a burden to teachers struggling to correct them.

Most of the indiscipline cases exhibited by learners emanate from peer pressure, which includes the use of drugs, alcoholic drinks and other related substances.

The result is that other learners and teachers often lack the peace required in school.

However, when the Guidance and Counselling Department is active in school, such truancy behaviour can be corrected in time, and affected learners can change and continue with their education.

The effect of high discipline in school has proved successful academically and in co-curricular activities.

The biggest challenge now arises when the teacher becomes a client of the Guidance and Counselling Department.

It’s not new in the teaching profession to find some teachers who are stressed due to financial constraints caused by over deductions and sometimes alcoholism.

Such teachers should be guided and Counselled and not ridiculed, and gradually change will be seen.

Some teachers attend school while dealing with family issues, including husband-and-wife disputes, and are expected to deliver lessons at school.

When such a case is noticed in a teacher, he should be handled with care in the Guidance and Counselling Department.

Some teachers on medication have mental cases caused by sickness, hence, as they attend to their lessons, they have to be guided and counselled.

The earlier the better for the affected teachers to be attended to, so that the learners do not feel the effect.

Sometimes, school administrators experience difficulty correcting some affected teachers, not knowing they are dealing with teachers who are stressed and have mental health issues.

However, with the Guidance and Counselling Department at the school, affected teachers will be assisted at the right time.

It’s also important for the staff to assist one another whenever there is a challenge to any of them.

The affected teachers also need to open up early, share their tribulations with a trusted colleague and get assistance to execute their duties properly.
