Beware of bad company, maintain focus, Kisii University VC tells students

By Enock Okong’o

University students have been asked to remain focused in order to advance their education, expand their knowledge and achieve their dreams.

Addressing first year students at Kisii University, the Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof John Akama likened their entry to the University to a long journey started but whose completion will be determined by the amount of energy, will and direction.

“The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. Today you have taken a step to make Kisii the University of your choice and  I am here to assure you that you are in the right place,” he said.

He cautioned the new students against bad company which might lead them astray with practices like drug abuse, radicalization and complacence in their studies.

“The University is where you meet people from the rest of the world, these people can influence you positively or negatively so be cautious in your choice of friends,” he added.

He asked the learners to appreciate the effort put in place by their parents and the government to support their education by working hard to produce stellar results at the end of their courses.

Prof. Akama noted that the University had admitted 5,000 new regular students this year and that there were more than 3,000 students who would join through self sponsorship.

He boasted of the quick growth by the University to become a globally admired institution of higher learning.

The VC attributed the growth to scientific research and the embracement of the modern technology in their tutorage.

He revealed that the University had seven schools that offered a variety of courses that range from Medicine, Engineering, Education and other market-oriented careers like Entrepreneurship.
