Students in Taita Taveta County who are going to benefit from education scholarships have been urged to move out of their comfort zones and work extremely hard to post excellent results in exams.
Speaking during the training of Mwatate and Taveta Ward Bursary Committees (WBCs), the CEO Education Funds Board Philip Mangale reiterated that the ward bursary committees will follow up on performance of the beneficiaries as well as mentoring the students as one of the ways of ensuring that the benefiting students get good results and portray a good image of the region.
“The committees should follow up and monitor the results of the benefiting students in a bid to ensure that they score good results through good mentorship because they represent their respective wards as well as the county at large,” said Mwangale.
Addressing the WBCs at the CDF Hall in Mwatate Sub-county, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for education, libraries and VTCs, Hon. Dephence Manga encouraged the committees to ensure fairness and equality in the vetting and selection process.
He added that receiving, viewing and approving of applications for education scholarships, performance and evaluation process of eligible students and monitoring their performance is in line with Taita Taveta County Education Fund Board regulations, 2018.
“The Act was designed to reduce disparities and irregularities in the provision of Education funds and improve education standards and literacy levels in the County. This is one of the ways that will ensure only the needy, vulnerable and bright students get scholarships,” added Manga.
The training seeks to remind the WBCs of their roles and the mechanisms guiding the process in a bid to ensure accountability and eradication of any form of favouritism and corruption during the awarding process across the 20 wards.
The vetting, shortlisting and selection of the beneficiaries is expected to start during the week across the 20 wards.
Members present during the training session were the County Chief Officer for Education, Libraries and VTC’s Mr. Justus Singi, chairman Education Funds Board, Mr David Mombo, Director Youths, Sports, Gender, Culture and Social Services Mr. Wallace Mwaluma, MCA managers and Ward administrators, who are secretaries to ward Bursary Committees among other County Officials.
