More than 370 beneficiaries of the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF)’s Elimu Scholarship Programme were mentored at the first JKF Achievers Summit held in Nairobi County on Monday.

The inaugural summit, whose theme was “Unleash My Potential, Shape My Future”, addressed issues the learners face at home and in school besides guiding them on how to better their future.

The Nairobi region summit was held at St Georges Primary School, with experts guiding the learners in setting important goals, making decisions and protecting the environment.

The learners also planted trees to support the government initiative of increasing forest cover to about 30 per cent by 2032.

JKF Managing Director (MD) David Mwaniki, who was the chief guest, challenged the learners to focus on unleashing their potential for a better future, noting that success depends on how they conduct themselves.

The director said around 16,000 students from 45 counties applied for the scholarships, but only 3,000 spaces were available. He challenged the beneficiaries to fully focus on their studies to remain under the plan as there are many who need the sponsorship.

Mwaniki commended donors who have been supporting the vulnerable students, calling for more consideration for those who were left out.

JKF is under the ministry’s Elimu Scholarship Programme managing 3,000 scholarships worth Ksh1.1 billion. The parastatal expends its profits on advancement of education.

The comprehensive scholarships cater for school fees, transport to and from school, school kit, pocket money and basic items for the four-year secondary education.
