Beef up security in Kapedo or we withdraw teachers, KUPPET warns

By Enock Kipturgut

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has asked the government to guarantee the safety of teachers in volatile areas in Baringo and Turkana counties, failure to which it will ask its members to leave.

Kuppet Assistant National Treasurer Ronald Tonui supported the ongoing security operation in Tiaty and Kapedo aimed at flushing out bandits.

He, however, called on security officers to proceed with caution lest innocent people are hurt in the operation.

“We ask for caution to ensure teachers, learners and support staff is not hurt in the process,” said Tonui who is also the Bomet Central MP.

He urged the government to provide teachers and schools with adequate security until security is restored.

Tonui also asked the Teachers Service Commission to provide insurance and risk allowances to teachers who work in insecurity-prone areas.

He was speaking to the press at Marigat High School in Baringo South sub-county during Kuppet branch elections.

He attributed the low turnout in the election to the prevailing insecurity in the area.

In the election, Zachariah Kipsaina Nyomboi won the Executive Secretary post, beating three candidates including acting incumbent Christopher Kimosop.
