Be on the lookout for learners who abuse drugs, principals urged

By Enock Okong’o

Secondary school Principals have been advised to be more wary about learners who often abuse drugs.

Speaking to the Catholic Church Sponsored Secondary Schools Principals at St. Vincent Pastoral Centre in Kisii town, Kisii Diocece Bishop Okemwa Mairura, raised much concern on the vice.

He said that unless the country puts stringent measures in the fight of all crimes among the youth, the country will not have leaders of integrity in the future.

“Every nation depends on its youth for future survival and sustainability therefore we have no reason to shy away from investing in our youths and safeguarding them from all evils,” he said.

The Bishop who was flanked by his two priests, Father Mandere and Father Masese, lauded the Principals for steering their schools to perform well in the 2021 KCSE examinations.

He singled out the chief principal of St. Paul’s Gekano Boys High School, Albert Ombiro and his counterpart from Nyansiongo, for reviving their schools to retain their lost glory in examination performance.

“I would like to ask you to emulate these two gentlemen who are navigating on the academic compass to bring their institutions to their old glory,” remarked  the Bishop.

Father Lawrence Nyaanga who was in attendance and  doubles as the chaplain of Kisii University, reminded principals whose schools have big junks of land to ascertain that students did not sneak to plant bhang in the peripheries.

“Most our learners are mischievous and they need close supervision,” said Fr. Nyaanga.

In her response towards the fight of drugs, the KESSHA chairman for Kisii branch, Mrs. Joyce Orioki, thanked the Bishop for  the timely wake -up call.

She thanked the church for assisting in the development of education in addition to the provision of spiritual nourishment to the community.

She appealed to all school heads, parents and students to work in harmony with the church in order to achieve quality standards of education in the region.

Mrs. Orioki thanked the church for extending amicable relationships to the schools they sponsor.

“Unlike in the past where we had interference from our sponsors, these days we are at peace with them,” she said.

She attributed the good existing relationship to the astitute leadership exhibited by the Kisii  Catholic Schools Secretary Mr.Christopher Osinde and the education Board Chairman Prof.Henry Onderi.
