Baringo Teachers College to be converted to Baringo University College

A taskforce, appointed by the Governor of Baringo County in October 2022, has published a report recommending Baringo University College of Technology (BUCT) be established at the Baringo Teachers College.

The taskforce, chaired by Professor Chebutuk Rotich visited various institutions such as the Kenya School of Government in Kabarnet, Chemeron Dryland Research Training & Ecotourism Center, Moi Baringo Teachers Training College and Mogotio Vocational Training Institute before settling on Baringo Teachers College.

According to the report by the taskforce, The Teachers College was established in 1991 as a public primary teachers’ college and later expanded to offer Diploma programmes in Primary Teacher Education and Early Childhood Teacher Education.

“Baringo University College of Technology (BUCT) is proposed to be hosted at the Baringo Teachers College, Seretunin which is located on a 57.9 acre campus in Baringo Kenya. The Teachers College, which is currently under-utilized, was established in 1911 as a public primary teachers’ college and later expanded to offer Diploma programs in Primary Teacher Education and Early Childhood Teacher Education,” reads the report.

According to the report, the proposed name for the University College is “Baringo University College of Technology.” Additionally, Moi University has been suggested as the mentoring institution

The report indicates that the establishment of Baringo University College of Technology is mandated by the Universities Act 42 of 2012, with a focus on prioritizing counties that lack universities.

“The establishment of Baringo University College of Technology is a requirement under the Universities Act 42 of 2012, prioritizing counties without universities,” reads the report.

According to the report, the proposed Baringo University College of Technology (BUCT) will be governed by a structure that includes a Governing Council, Senate from the Mentoring Institution, a College Academic Board, Standing Committees of College Academic Boards, and a College Management Board.

“The proposed University College shall be governed by a Governing Council, Senate from Mentoring Institution, College Academic Board, Standing Committees of College Academic Boards, and a College Management Board,”

The taskforce recommended that the proposed establishment of Baringo University College of Technology should be implemented to meet the educational needs of the region and that Moi University should continue its role as the mentoring university for BUCT and provide the necessary support, guidance, and expertise to ensure the successful establishment and functioning of the new institutions.

The taskforce also recommended BUCT to explore opportunities for partnerships and collaborations with local industries, research institutions, and other universities to enhance research and innovation activities.
