Baringo teacher wins African Union best teacher award

Jepkosgey Chemoiwa, a mathematics and physics teacher at Emining Boys High School in Mogotio, Baringo County, has won the 2025 African Union Continental Best Teacher Award, a prestigious recognition presented by UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa.

The award ceremony will be held next month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Chemoiwa will be celebrated as one of Africa’s most outstanding educators and receive the award.

Chomoiwa, who has taught for 15 years shared her joy, saying that the nomination came as a surprise, after learning that another teacher from Kenya forward her name for the African Union Best Teacher Contest.

“I never thought I would win, it never crossed my mind that one day I would try and win. In May I got a call from the TSC that I was nominated,” she said excited.

Teacher Chomoiwa admits that she enjoys teaching as a calling adding that she had head co-curriculum activities, which has helped her understand and connect with learners thus motivating them to like the science subjects.

She added that the award has boosted her morale in inspiring students and her colleagues saying that teaching is rewarding.

“I wish to give more to my learners and encourage the other teachers to emulate and pick lessons from winning.” She said

Chomoiwa  said that amidst challenges, she has remained positive and dedicated to her teaching career to refine students to excel in STEM subjects after their school was identified has the STEM center after starting the robotics training programme which was heavily affected by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

The African Union created the Teacher Prize to recognize the central role of teachers in achieving Agenda 2063’s education and skills revolution, outlined in the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 16–25). Teacher development is the strategy’s first objective, reflecting the AU’s commitment to restoring the status of the profession.
