Baringo MCAs lament exclusion of school feeding plan from national budget

Baringo MCAs speak to Education News in Kabarnet. They want the government to reverse the decision to exclude the school feeding programme from the national budget.

Members of Baringo County Assembly from insecurity zones have criticized the National Assembly Budget Committee chairman Ndindi Nyoro for failing to allocate funds to School Feeding Programme in 2024|2025 budget.

Speaking to Education News at the Assembly precincts, Sam Lokales (Tirioko) David Sitoi (Bartabwa) and Daniel Tuwit (Ribko) asked the committee to rescind the unfortunate decision.

Lokales said the government’s decision will derail efforts to retain pupils in school.

He said hundreds of school going children in the nomadic areas are likely to drop out of school this term if the programme is removed.

“We are on the verge of experiencing hundreds of school-going children dropping out in Baringo North and Tiaty constituencies if the issue is not resolved. The government should recognize Baringo is one of the marginalized areas with highest poverty index that should benefit from such allocations,” he said.

Tuwit said the move will impede government efforts to restore peace in the volatile areas of Baringo hit by incessant spates of bandit attacks.

Sitoi reiterated that the government was misplacing its priorities, saying denying children the much needed food will deprive them of their right of access to education as enshrined in the constitution.

He asked the government to treat as matter of urgency insecurity challenges, early marriages and retrogressive cultures, which can be curbed by keeping children in school.
