Baringo KNUT praises govt for pushing back reopening of schools

Bishop Joshua Cheptarus, Baringo KNUT Executive Secretary, has added voice to the matter of the government postponing the reopening of schools, lauding it as a good move.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Baringo Branch Executive Secretary Bishop Joshua Cheptarus has hailed government’s postponement of schools reopening until May 6, 2024.

Speaking to Education News  in Kabarnet town, the unionist said the current situation has  led to scores of deaths and displacement of  thousands.

However, the union boss said that before the ministry issued the statement late, the CS should have prepared parents and learners psychologically.

In a directive issued on Monday, April 29, 2024, Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu said the ongoing floods pounding parts of the country are severe and unsafe for learners.

The branch Executive Secretary further decried insecurity in the area which led to closure of 19 schools last term.

He said the fate of schools in the volatile borders of Baringo remain unknown following spates of attacks that have left dozens of people dead, pleading with the government to deploy more security personnel to the area to allow learning to continue.

He also appealed for humanitarian aid from well-wishers to assist learners and locals in Moinonin  Camp which is experiencing difficulties at the height of rising insecurity and floods.
