Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers in Baringo have once again staged demonstrations for the second day in Kabarnet town to pressurize the government to honour the court directive to employ them on Permanent and Pensionable (P&P) terms.

Intern teachers in the region want the government to confirm them to the service and compensate them for the duration they have delivered on their mandate.

Led by Baringo KUPPET Executive Secretary Zachary Nyomboi, the intern teachers asked Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to stop issuing threats but instead listen to their grievances.

Nyomboi said JSS teachers’ pay is a big joke citing that the 17,000 shillings paid to them was a drop in the ocean for professionals who are playing the critical role of laying the foundation for the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

The unionist lashed out on politicians, especially those sitting in crucial dockets in Parliament, for failing to do their job.

‘‘We are perturbed by the ongoing scam where the teacher employing body has colluded with politicians and top government officials to dish out employment letters to teachers who recently graduated and their relatives. This behaviour in funerals is uncalled for and distresses intern teachers who are getting meagre pay,” said the union official.

Nyomboi indicated that the union and JSS teachers alias ‘Moguls’ will not be cowed  with threats by TSC, threatening to go on with their demonstrations until their complaints are addressed.

He urged officials of the Ministry of Education (MoE) to stop intimidating teachers and let them push for their rights.
