Baringo girl seeks aid to pay fees after trekking kilometres to join Form 1

Viola Rono, the 14-year-old girl who walked herself to Arap Moi Secondary School.

Viola Rono, a 14-year-old girl from Kiboino, Baringo Central, took matters into her own hands after encountering financial constraints in joining Form One.

Unable to secure the necessary fees, she decided to admit herself to Arap Moi Secondary School in Bartabwa Ward, Baringo North.

Her journey began with a trek from Kiboino to Kabarnet, where she hitched a ride to Ossen. There, the kindness of a woman selling bananas provided her with shelter.

Today morning, she continued her journey, receiving lifts to Kabartonjo and Kipsaraman, before trekking to Barbarchun. Finally, a motorbike ride brought her to Arap Moi Secondary School.

Raised by a single mother who sells firewood to earn a living, the girl’s determination and initiative deeply moved the school’s teachers. Hearing her story, they were touched and organized a fundraiser to provide her with a uniform.

According to Daniel Cherutich, one of the teachers at the school, they decided to host the girl at the school while they seek sponsors to support her education and basic needs.

They are now appealing to well-wishers to come forward and help this bright young student achieve her educational dreams.
