Bar loud music near schools, KNUT boss urges gov’t

By Mathews Bulimo

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Mt Elgon branch executive secretary Mr Stephen Chemonges has appealed to the education and internal security ministries to ensure that residents and politicians don’t play loud music around schools so that KCPE and KCSE candidates have ample time to prepare for their national exams.

Chemonges argued that the education calendar was packed and that learners should be given time to revise what they have learned.

‘The Covid-19 pandemic led to the closure of schools and teachers didn’t have time to interact with the students. As the students make their final touches for the KCPE/KCSE exams, I want to urge CS Magoha and CS Matiangi to ensure loud music isn’t played around learning institutions,’ he pointed out.

He further added that schools that hadn’t completed their syllabus coverage should do so.

The Unionist urged the government to release funds for the completion of the construction of CBC classrooms so that the CBC students who should join junior secondary have an easy time.

‘The construction of CBC classrooms in Mt Elgon has stalled due  to lack of funds to complete them. I therefore urge the Ministry of Education to release the funds for the completion of the classrooms,’ he said, adding that if the completion of the classrooms isn’t completed on time, it will hinder the 100% transition policy in Mt. Elgon.

‘The completion of the CBC classrooms will give high chances for learners to join junior secondary schools,’ he argued.

The Unionist urged the Ministry of birth and registration of persons to fast track the issuing of birth certificates to learners to ease their registration process when schools reopen.

He asked parents to ensure that grade seven learners acquire their verified documents for exam registration and avoid last minute rush during registration.

“Parents should ensure that learners get access to the documents for their national exams registration, which will take place immediately after schools reopen,” he said.

He added that CBC implementation is still a challenge and assured the public that KNUT will support the Ministry of Education in the implementation of CBC.
