Auditor General raises alarm on lack of resources in public primary schools

Auditor-General of the Republic of Kenya Nancy Gathungu has reported that public primary schools are struggling due to inadequate resources to improve infrastructure and other facilities.

“Data analysis from the Ministry of Education, it indicates that 10 per cent of about 22,000 public primary schools were funded from the school infrastructure improvement Grant. From the statistics, each school received an average of Ksh.648,543 which was not enough to cater for all needs of a school,” she added.

Ms. Gathungu stated that the Ministry of Education (MoE) had not prioritized infrastructure development in learning institutions since the end of November 2021.

Lack of school amenities such as water and electricity had created difficulties in managing schools.

“There are different procedures used to apply and allocate school infrastructure improvement grants in institutions. Some schools write letters to MoE while others submit project proposals with bills of quantities attached. MoE should employ criteria for knowing the schools that need to be supplied with the resources,” she said.

She added that MoE should partner with the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) and other well-wishers to help fund most needy schools for better learning.
