Tegla Loroupe was born in 1963 in West Pokot County. Her home is in Siyoi, Kapenguria, in West Pokot County.
She is a long-distance runner on the track and road.
She is also a global spokesperson for peace, Women’s Rights, and Education.
Tegla holds the World records for 25 and 30 Kilometres and previously held the world Marathon record.
Loroupe was the 1st African woman to hold the Marathon world Record from April 1998 until 30th September 2001.
Again, she is the 3-time World Half Marathon Champion. To crown it all, Loroupe was the first woman from Africa to win the New York City Marathon, which she has won twice.
As a tough lady in Athletics, she has won Marathons in London, Rotterdam, Hong Kong, Berlin, and Rome.

In recognising her great contribution in Athletics and Sports, the African National Olympic Committee (ANOCA) recently awarded her with a Medal in Recognition of her leadership and Commitment in supporting the Judo for Peace Programme.
She is also an Executive member of ANOCA representing the refugees.
Tegla Loroupe’s recognition was widely received by West Pokot KNUT members who were attending the KNUT ADC in Nairobi, led by Mr Martin Sembelo, the Executive Secretary, Mr Joseph Rusii, the Assistant Executive Secretary, Madam Fridah Arusho, the KNUT Woman Representative, Madam Christine Ibrahim, the vice chairperson, Madam Christine Kasheusheu, the treasurer and Madam Veronica Lopoyetum Riwo, the vice treasurer.
“Tegla Loroupe is the champion for education as the Annual Tegla Loroupe Peace Race in West Pokot County greatly improved security for teachers and learners at border schools, ” said Mr Sembelo.
Tegla Loroupe, under her initiative, also established the Tegla Loroupe School in Siyoi, West Pokot County, to help learners from the local community access Education.
