Artisans without formal academic certificates are being encouraged to take advantage of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program.
PRL enables them to gain official certification based on their existing skills and experience.
Kipsoiywo Technical Training Institute (TTI) Director Julius Bittok said RPL is opening doors for thousands of skilled individuals who have not undergone formal education, allowing them to secure employment and advance their careers.
“RPL gives an opportunity to those who may not have gone through the traditional school system, but have hands-on skills,” Bittok said.
“Through assessment and certification, these individuals can now access jobs and even further training.”
He was speaking during an RPL sensitisation programme held in Iten town, where he also revealed that a significant number of youths have already enrolled for the program at his institution.
“We have seen great interest in RPL. Many young people are now realising they can turn their skills into recognised qualifications,” he added.

Bittok emphasised that RPL is available in all TTIs across the country and called on more youths to come forward and take advantage of the initiative.
The call was echoed by Eldoret Technical Training Institute Director, Elish Maiyo, who urged young people to embrace TVET training and certification as a pathway to employment and self-reliance.
“Skills are the future. Whether you are a welder, mason, or tailor, you deserve recognition for what you already know. RPL is the way forward,” said Maiyo.
The government, through the TVET Authority, has been spearheading reforms in technical and vocational education, placing strong emphasis on Recognition of Prior Learning as a tool to formalise skills and bridge the gap between training and employment.
The RPL program is part of a broader national strategy to tackle unemployment and empower informal sector workers by validating their competencies and aligning them with labour market needs.
