Anger as TSC is accused of hiring teachers secretly

TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia with KNUT SG Collins Oyuu. There is seething anger at the commission owing to reports it is hiring teachers secretly on permanent terms.

There is growing anger at The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) due to reports that it is secretly hiring teachers on permanent and pensionable terms without advertising the vacancies.

This has raised concerns among teachers and stakeholders in the education sector, who believe that the TSC is reverting to the past when politicians had control of the hiring process.

“The TSC should not allow politicians to influence the hiring decisions as this undermines the credibility of the education system,” James Macharia from Nakuru said.

It has been alleged that politicians are filling vacant positions in their respective constituencies without public knowledge.

Furthermore, there have been protests from teachers on JSS internships who claim that the TSC is colluding with politicians to employ known teachers on permanent terms, bypassing the internship programme.

This has caused frustration among those who have been serving as interns for almost two years as they feel their efforts are not being recognized.

“It is distressing to hear of the new developments at the TSC. If this continues, then the commission is losing its reputation as it mistreats teachers who graduated long ago while it upholds unjustified favouritism,” Geoffrey Sang from Bomet County said.

The Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recently addressed the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) delegates and assured them that the government will prioritize hiring more teachers, with interns being given the first opportunity.

However, the recent actions of the TSC seem to contradict this position.
