Big relief as students from Amabuko Secondary School in Kisii who were admitted to various county hospitals have been discharged.
According to the school Principal, Lawlings Juma reported that 174 students had fallen ill after consuming a meal of kales and Ugali at the school, experiencing stomachaches, vomiting, and diarrhea.
“Most were treated and released the following morning, but 20 students in critical condition received further medical attention at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital,” he stated.
The Director of Medical Services at KRTH Dr. Richard Marita reported that preliminary medical tests indicated that the students had consumed poisoned food, but their condition had improved, and they were now out of danger.
He further said that among the 20 students treated at Kisii Hospital, 17 were girls, while the remaining 3 were boys.
“The girls were discharged on Tuesday, and the boys would be released on Wednesday, pending observation by doctors who noted their fatigue,” Dr. Marita added.
Kisii County Commissioner, Said Tom Anjere, confirmed that a team of medical personnel had been sent to the school to investigate the cause of the illnesses.
He emphasized that there was no outbreak at the institution until official confirmation from medical professionals.
The Commissioner also assured parents of their children’s safety as the candidates prepared for their upcoming national examinations.
