Alupe University in Busia County on Thursday November 13, 2025 celebrated its 4th graduation ceremony, awarding degrees and diplomas to 439 graduands, as Principal Secretary for the State Department of Higher Education and Research, Dr Beatrice Inyangala, called on universities to champion climate-smart education.
Addressing the Class of 2025, Dr Inyangala congratulated the graduates for their dedication and resilience, describing them as the country’s future leaders. She stressed that universities must go beyond academics to equip students with the skills and mindset to tackle Kenya’s environmental and developmental challenges.
“Our universities are empowering the next generation of leaders for a healthy and sustainable future,” Dr Inyangala said. “Institutions must integrate sustainability into their curriculum, research, and campus life. Climate-smart education is key to our nation’s progress.”
The PS praised Alupe University for its growing contributions in health, environmental science, and community development, noting the institution’s emergence as a hub of innovation in western Kenya. She urged universities to adopt practical sustainability initiatives, such as renewable energy, effective waste management, and eco-friendly agricultural practices, to instil environmental responsibility among students.
